'I Suck at Drawing' ™ - Alexanda Bushey
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alexanda Bushey, Founder and Owner of 'I Suck at Drawing' ™, located in Olympia, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are 'I Suck at Drawing' ™; we represent a nation; from the age you toot to the age you scoot, we gonna represent you.
Tell us about yourself
On June 29th, 2021, we hit a breaking point in creativity. Knowing that continuously creating new designs or reinventing old ones would be out of my wheelhouse, I drew on a Drawing App, Draw Editor, “I suck at drawing” two tries later, ‘ISAD’ ™ was born. Later discovering (three months) that no one owned that trademark, I took action and bought it in multiple classes. Before ‘I suck at drawing’ ™, there was ‘Major Change,’ and that’s where it started.
Going into the creation of ‘Major Change,’ my heart was set on creating something to excite people for my upcoming album idea, ‘Major Change EP.’ Through that process of ‘Major Change’ (no pun intended), ‘ISAD’ ™ was discovered. ‘I suck at drawing’ ™ wasn’t an attempt at a brand; it was a breaking point. ‘Major Change’ is what started everything, and as of September 2022 (some time one year later), only 200 outta 2,500+ people ever paid for any and all ‘I suck at Drawing’ ™ merchandise. ‘Major Change’ is now a tagline for the brand, stating that “No matter what, giving back, doing things differently, and putting people first, will always be our number one priority.” Now one year into ‘ISAD’ and we continue our journey; free stickers can be found through the Free Sticker Page; monthly events are held in conjunction with local businesses all across the Pacific Northwest, where you can win exclusive gear!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Giving away so much free stuff, hands down! Whether this "business strategy" works or not, giving back has always been the most rewarding part of the whole brand.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about starting or being the owner of a growing business is learning everything doesn't go according to plan, but THAT'S OKAY! Problem-solving, being resourceful, and being open to learning new things and failure is what it's all about, and if along the way you can just learn to melt with it and not fight it, you'll be better off. Everything about starting a new company is problem-solving and being resourceful.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Keep going, AKA, never give up. It doesn't mean you can't change course/direction or plan.
- Be ready for and enjoy failure. Enjoy learning from your mistakes.
- You gotta have fun. You gotta like/love what you're doing; it's gonna be a long road.
