Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Steve Woods, Owner of Hypnosis Fore Golf, located in Stafford, Staffordshire, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Hypnotist with over 18 years of experience. Having worked in the therapy world for a large proportion of that time, I now specialise in helping golfers with their winning mindset. I work with all levels of golfers that want to be better but get in their own way in their heads. I also work with other sports and business performance.

Tell us about yourself

I got into hypnosis around 35 years ago after seeing a stage hypnotist and using some self-hypnosis tapes. I still use self-hypnosis every day, and that motivates me to continue to help others and teach self-hypnosis alongside the performance-enhancing work my clients want to achieve. I enjoy the variety that each individual client brings to my day and have no need for standard hypnosis scripts. Every client is different.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

There have been a lot of obvious challenges to overcome recently as a business owner, but for me, it has been to speak at large medical events to doctors and consultants as well as recently presenting to a worldwide conference of hypnotists. When I started, it never crossed my mind that people would value what I do to that level. This exposure has allowed me to grow my client base and raise my profile and credibility in business as well as hypnosis.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

We usually start a business because we love doing something, not because we want to do the paperwork and admin tasks. The hardest thing for me was getting over that and accepting early on you need help; you need experts around you to free you up to do your thing.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Whilst you may be brilliant at your thing, start early to get help with admin and paperwork.
  2. Start to think early about how you will be able to scale the business, even though this may seem a long way into the future.
  3. Have fun. When you love what you do, people will buy into your enthusiasm, and you won't have to sell. Your clients and customers will come to you because they love your story and energy.
