Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kayla Fichtenberg, founder of Hygge Candle Co., located in Regina, SK, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Hygge Candle Co. is a coconut soy candle company that is not only good for the environment but also for us. I wanted to create something we could all feel good about what we are burning in our homes. Hygge candles are hand poured with the most luxurious coconut soy wax accompanied by a crackling wood wick. All our ingredients and fragrances are free from lead, petroleum, palm, carcinogens, and other toxins. Hygge candles are also eco-friendly, and one of my goals in starting Hygge Candle Co. was to make sure we can be a sustainable brand.
Tell us about yourself
I have always loved burning candles! I started to pay attention to what was in the candles I was burning and what I was breathing in. Many candles are made with synthetic paraffin wax, which is unsustainable, and traditional candles contain lots of chemicals that produce toxins in the air. Soy wax candles are plant-based, last longer, and burn much cleaner compared to synthetic paraffin candles. I wanted to make non-toxic and clean candles so we can all enjoy burning candles with the peace of mind of knowing what is in the candles for myself, others, and our fur babies.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am very proud of how far Hygge Candle Co. has come in the last 1.5 years. I started creating candles as a creative outlet, saw so much potential with this hobby, and decided to make it a full-time business. In the last year, we have teamed up with other local businesses and launched some amazing collaborations that took my business to the next level.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest part for me is getting out of my comfort zone! As any human being, we can all get stuck listening to the negative voices and doubts in our minds, and it can sometimes feel discouraging. A challenge I struggle with every day is to keep showing up and believing in yourself because if you do, others will as well!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Do your research and really understand what you are getting yourself into, decide how you're going to set yourself apart from the rest of the competition, and set goals!!
