Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matt Mullenax, Co-Founder of Huron, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Huron is a men's personal care brand that wants to help guys help themselves. We've built a science-backed, performance-based line of men's grooming products for the face, body, and hair to help guys not only look but also FEEL their best. Our customers range from guys trading up from the drug-store products he's been using since middle school to folks more familiar with the space but are drawn to Huron's more approachable price points.
Tell us about yourself
Simply put, I was the kid who grew up with bad skin. I struggled for 15 years to find products that would help curb my acne, bacne, and redness. The products that inevitably worked were way too expensive, so we set out to build a relatable, customer-first brand that's empathetic to the struggle. And we built an assortment of products that's more approachable in price points. The name 'Huron' comes from Huron Street in downtown Chicago, where I lived when my skin issues were at their worst. So when I see the 'Huron' name approximately 300,000 times a day, it's a great reminder of who we're fighting for. And that is essentially me and my experiences 10 years ago.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The biggest feat is rather the snowball effect of so many uplifting and positive customer testimonials we receive. How these products have worked to clear skin, eliminate body odor, and otherwise help tackle issues guys face. We're helping these guys rediscover their self-confidence, and that's a huge win.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Balance. Entrepreneurship is not a 24-7 role; it's 25-8. You're always on, and there's always something to be done. It's motivating, challenging, and fun. But flipping the 'OFF' switch at night becomes difficult.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be the voice of Yes. You'll find a million reasons as to why now is not time right time or this is not the right idea, etc.
- Be honest with yourself regarding your strengths and weaknesses. Double down on the former hire for the latter.
- Built something where you're the customer. It will keep you close to the mission.
