Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Humza Khan, Principal Choreographer of Za Dance Studio, located in Alpharetta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a K-pop & Hip Hop dance studio; our customer base includes mainly dancers and K-pop fans.
Tell us about yourself
I’ve been a professional dancer for almost four years now, and I enjoy giving back to the dance community, watching aspiring dancers grow, and passing down the knowledge and training I’ve gained over the years.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being able to become save space for dancers to practice and work on
their craft. For a long time, the dance culture has always been very
harsh and judgmental, but I was able to create a culture within our studio
that’s very inclusive and judge free.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Learning how to navigate the business/entrepreneur world without
having any formal college education.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find your gift, and find your passion; by finding these two things and knowing the difference, you’ll be able to combine something you are passionate about and be skilled/talented at said thing.
- Take risks; the last thing you’d want to do is 40 years from now, you look back on your life and think, “what if I had started that business” and imagine how your life may have turned out better. It’s better to take risks and fail than never take the risk and never know.
- Become a people person. The more hands you shake, the more money you make, and they say your network is your net worth. Learn to get to know people and how to interact. Asking questions and talking to strangers may end up with you starting a new business.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Nothing worth having is easy to attain. So, any adversities you may face along the way are a part of the process and make you appreciate the work it takes to achieve whatever goal you may be trying to achieve.
