Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in organizational development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ciela Hartanov, Founder & Managing Director of humcollective, located in San Francisco, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
humcollective helps leaders become better instruments for sense-making and meaning-making. The humcollective following practice innovation method helps leaders reinvent their systems, structures, skill sets, and processes–creating something new for their people and business. The process is inclusive and makes the client smarter for having taken part. This service is for leaders with conviction, vision & grit working at mid-to-large-size companies who are hungry for change and want to be part of creating the future of work that is, at a minimum, more humane, equitable, sustainable, and joyful.
Tell us about yourself
Work doesn’t work for us anymore. No matter how many flexible work arrangements or software packages we bring, leaders are overwhelmed by the pace of change, burnt out, and struggling to find the time and energy for real innovation. I’m an organizational psychologist, human behavior expert, writer, and thinker dedicated to reinventing work. I am passionate about helping leaders create a revolution inside the modern workplace, one aimed at breaking a system that promotes work practices that have existed since the industrial era.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is the how of my work, not the what. I am proud to create an environment for clients that is innovative and cutting-edge but also demonstrates warmth and humility. This is where the best ideas come from when no one is considered the smartest in the room. We are all smarter when we use our collective intelligence.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest part of being a business owner is staying true to your conviction and integrity with your lines of service. It may be tempting to deliver anything a client wants from you, but you must remember what you are uniquely positioned to do.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Set goals, but be generous to outcomes. You want to look at micro-indicators of progress over significant, lofty goal achievement.
- Follow your heart. Continue to remind yourself what you are offering and why. Your heart is the best anchor when the going gets tough.
- Surround yourself with a hype squad. Make sure you have a community that can support and bolster you.
