Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with John Waller, founder of Humble Nut Butter, located in Minneapolos, MN.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We're proud to be woman-owned and an inclusive employer. We make nutritious, plant-based foods with a savory flavor profile. Our customers live active lifestyles, prioritize health and wellness, and support brands with transparent values.

Tell us about yourself

Jess and I grew up in the 80's and 90's. Living through fad diets and witnessing the rise in sugar consumption; which has had a catastrophic impact on our health system, we were motivated to do our small part to combat this. As consumers, we wanted more savory options that were nutritious, tasty, versatile, and ideally plant-based. That's what sent us down the path to launch Humble. I'm energized and appreciative when I meet customers who love our unique products. I'm motivated to prove you can build a successful business that prioritizes health and transparency over profit margins. That doesn't mean we're anti-profit; it means that profits will be a byproduct of unwaveringly honest values as a company.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Remaining a present and engaged father; while navigating the pandemic and endless business priorities.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having a lack of resources. Specifically: time, bandwidth and money.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

#1 Closely examine your intent. Are you really trying to solve a problem you're passionate about?

#2 However hard you think this will be, multiply that by at least three.

#3 Push yourself out of your comfort zone. That often leads to progress.

#4 Prioritize your well-being. Starting a business will take over your life. If you don't schedule breaks and focus on your own health, it will lead to real problems.

Anything else you'd like to share?

Entrepreneurship can be enthralling, life-changing, and it's worth it in my humble opinion. But don't underestimate how hard it is.
