Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Robinson-Hudson, Founder & Clinical Psychologist of Hudson Counseling Clinic, located in Burnsville, MN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hudson Counseling Clinic supports clients to "breathe your values and live your authenticity" through therapy. Each of our therapists offers unique skills and serves different people, but we have a unique focus on offering top-notch Adlerian therapy. I have a unique focus on serving people who are intellectually gifted and those who are twice exceptional.

Tell us about yourself

I freaking love my work, and I feel compelled to do it. There is no greater privilege than being granted a window into someone's life and witnessing their healing. I knew I wanted to be a psychologist and own my own business when I was 16 and took my first psychology class in high school. It felt so clear and intuitive, but looking back, I think that it was a desire to create a genuine connection with others. We live in a world where we often see the highlight reels of someone's life online. It's about trends- appearing better than we are. I wanted something honest and real. Nothing is more honest and real than therapy. I am a big nerd, and I'm passionate about Adlerian theory. I was incredibly blessed to be mentored by Dr. Harold Mosak when I was in graduate school. I would spend 20 hours a week with him co-teaching, conducting co-therapy, sitting in supervision, and just talking about therapy, theory, and life. I stand on the shoulders of those who have come before me, and I want to build something bigger than myself. A place to support not only clients but the clinicians themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating a sanctuary of belonging. All of us want to fit in, but those at HCC belong there. I know the impact of working in a setting with a toxic culture and the impact of instability. I take pride in offering a place of stability and trust for my co-workers as well as our clients. When I support the counseling staff, all of their clients benefit. The culture of a business is felt by every client who uses your service. I am intentional in cultivating our company culture so that we all want to come to work and serve our clients.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

At the end of the day, you will be responsible and accountable for everything that happens within your business. As a result, you may have uncomfortable and direct conversations with people. While confrontation can be uncomfortable, I believe honesty can be respectful.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your why. It is the fuel in your engine, and it's the thing that makes you stand out in your field.
  2. Operate from integrity. You never know how your actions will unfold into new opportunities.
  3. Time is your most precious resource. Learning how to delegate tasks is essential for scale.
