Change your EXCUSES for ACTIONS - How to Stop Procrastinating
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Paty Johnston, Founder of How to Stop Procrastinating, located in Tampa, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Leadership Coach, Trainer, and Speaker with the John Maxwell Team and the founder of a program called "How To Stop Procrastinating In in 30 days". I help individuals that are tired of not fulfilling the promises they made to themselves. Business owners and self-employed people who feel they have a lot on their plate and feel tired and need to re-organize their business, time, and lives.
I help people who are overwhelmed by the many things they need to do and feel that they are not accomplishing much in spite of being very busy and not doing the things that they know they are supposed to be doing. I show them how to take action and stop procrastinating in 30 days so that they can actually start fulfilling their personal and professional goals and start feeling good about themselves and what they can accomplish.
Tell us about yourself
I am originally from Colombia and came to the US as a single mom. I was tired of my job, and I knew in my heart that I could do better. I had been told growing up that I could amount to much, and for the longest time, I believed it. I have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and mid-dyslexia, and I didn't see a way to succeed. My life was a mess, and even though I knew exactly what to do, I didn't do it. I started studying how to fix my procrastination, and I created a system that helped me get unstuck. After that, I have had multi-million dollar businesses, and I have been able to share my system with many other people that want to be the best they can be! What motivates me every day is to see others feeling better about themselves and fulfilling their call in life. It's a privilege for me to be part of their success story.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I was an immigrant from Colombia, a single Mom, and at a job that I didn’t like. Every single week I thought I should quit. One day I was courageous enough and decided to leave that job and open up my own business. I opened it with $2000, and it was all the savings that I had in my life. Before I could open it, there were three major hurricanes that came through Florida. I thought about quitting every single time a hurricane was coming, but I persisted, my business did really well, and after only 18 months, I was able to sell my business for $500,000. I couldn’t believe it.
Can you imagine if I had quit at the first hurricane, on the second, or the third hurricane? I would have lost the great opportunity of having my own business. So next time you think about quitting, know that your breakthrough might be just around the corner. That’s what allowed me to be a coach today. I now have the privilege of showing others how to overcome difficulties, how to stop procrastinating, and take action so that they can be who they need to be and reach everything they can actually reach and fulfill their potential.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Keeping balance and priorities. The many things that come your way can be stressful and overwhelming. I learned that putting myself first is not selfish, but it's actually necessary!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be courageous and follow your dreams.
- Be who you are. There is strength in being genuine.
- Take action. Don't procrastinate!
