What's your business, and who are your customers?
House of James is an Australia-based modelling academy dedicated to empowering aspiring models with the knowledge and confidence to take ownership of their modelling careers. Women aged 15-25 are our client base - generally amateur models starting out in the industry.
Tell us about yourself
I started modelling properly when I was 17. Since the beginning, and even as a young adult attending modelling jobs, I was aware that the industry lacked professionalism, induction processes, guidance, and follow-up for young female models. This is where I wanted to make a difference in the modelling world. By creating a business that attacks industry topics head-on, answers questions before they need to be asked, and provides models with a savvy education, I want my students to walk away with the skills to make informed decisions throughout their careers.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was making my very first sale 3 weeks after launching after putting less than $200 into marketing.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I'd say wearing all the different hats and having everything solely on you and your commitment - If I'm too tired to send that last email or fix up planning or preparation - the buck stops with me. Accountability at its finest, and it's a big learning curve.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Put the customer first; my business coach taught me that if the customer is your number one focus, the money flows. Not the other way around.
- Consistency - It's been said, but I'm consistent in my approach.
- Try to remain positive or look for something positive even when things are stagnant - there are times when I feel like nothing's happening currently with my own business or I've run out of ideas, so I'll go for a long walk with no music and put my thinking cap on. When a door is shut, I look for the nearest window.
