Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fashion but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shalandria Mcglown, Owner, and CEO of Hot Commodity EyeWear, located in Detroit, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

In 2011, I founded Hot Commodity EyeWear LLC. I am a Detroit, Michigan, resident. HCEW has been honored to build confidence and inspire fashion-forward. Our customer seeks to be fashionable, vibrant visionary style, and a class act. As with the main principles of building any collection, our goal is to push the limits of quality.

Tell us about yourself

"Glam hospitality and d girl hustle" sum me up. Born in Union Springs, Alabama, but raised in Detroit, Michigan. At the age of five, I knew I would be a fashion designer. My Barbie dress would be extremely cute. I would like my church stocks that had fancy lace and ruffles. I went to college at Wayne State University with a major in fashion design. However, I had some challenges in life and settled for an associate's degree in Arts.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Thinking outside the box of just local fashion. My city loves sunglasses. When we step outside of Detroit, it's clear who we are. However, my goal is to push your inner bougie, sexy, and glamour. Guarantee fashionable eyewear that speaks your truth! American Glam is not a lifestyle. It's a way of living.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Push the boundaries with a style that is unapologetically authentic. Sometimes, trends put you in a box to reach your customers. However, I promote my collection to show elevation and growth. Hot Commodity EyeWear is built to Innovate, Cultivate and Dominate fashion eyewear all over the world.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The pandemic has shown me that digital marketing is so important. Don't be afraid to invest in your brand and yourself. People will appreciate your brand and you by giving you loyalty. Lastly, no one can master your culture like you. Tell your community story with your brand. When you are raw and rare, you can never lose.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Stay tuned for Hot Commodity EyeWear to walk the runway of Miami Swim Week on July 18, 2022. We will be live on our Facebook and Instagram pages. The show is presented by Flying Solo. Also, I am in the running to be the next Ultimate Stylist for 2022. Ultimate Stylist is a competition for people who help others look and feel their best. Compassion plays a key role in being a stylist, which is why we are proud to support the Born This Way Foundation. This incredible nonprofit was co-founded by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, to support the mental health of young people and work with them to create a kinder and braver world. Your purchased votes for me help us donate to this worthy cause.
