Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Tara Scott, Founder of Hormone Guru Academy, located in Fairlawn, OH, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am an integrative gynecologist that specializes in women's hormones and health. I have my clinical practice in Ohio, but due to licensing can only work with people who live or travel to Ohio. My second business, Hormone Guru Academy, is a way to reach patients without boundaries. We have online programs- both live and asynchronous- that can help women suffering from hormone imbalances.
Tell us about yourself
I got my start as a traditional OB/GYN and delivered a lot of babies! After I struggled with endometriosis and infertility, I felt called to learn more about hormone imbalances. I became a certified menopause practitioner from the North American Menopause Society and earned two more board certifications- one in functional medicine and one in integrative medicine. Since my brother suddenly died at the age of 38 from a heart attack, I have been passionate about wellness and preventative medicine. Helping others achieve optimal health motivates me every day!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
One of the hardest things (besides the additional training) that I have had to do is learn how to run my business! We were not taught how to in medical school, and I had to teach myself all about social media, marketing, and running a business. I turned around our practice from being in the red to a profitable business model.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is that you are always working. There is never time off. During the day, I work clinically with patients, then at night, I make content for social media, teach other doctors, or work on some other aspect.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- The first thing that really helped me was to have a niche and really know who my ideal customer was since I had a very specific specialty that wasn't very hard.
- Engaging in the media was a huge help. I volunteered to help a lot of journalists with their stories, and now many reach out to me for expert quotes. This is free advertising.
- Keep your overhead low at first. Don't subscribe by "IF you build it, they will come."
