Holistic and Bilingual Homeschooling - HomeschoolToGo
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Houlie Duque, CEO of HomeschoolToGo, located in Fredericton, NB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business name is HomeschoolToGo, my customers are parents who care about their children's education, but instead of relying on private or public institutions, they know parental involvement is key to raising confident, independent, and conscious children. They do not feel overwhelmed by this task because our program covers all the planning, the projects, the resources, and the paperwork so that they can genuinely enjoy the upbringing of their children by injecting learning moments into their natural way of living.
Tell us about yourself
What got me started in business is my career as a teacher, using Waldorf, Montessori, and Cambridge Curriculums, and becoming a parent. Teaching is something I have been deeply passionate about, but doing it in a school system didn't resonate. I didn't feel like I was going to be able to offer my child the best opportunities unless I homeschooled. And when the time came for me to do so, I made sure I took the time to create the curriculum of my dreams. My son is my inspiration, and the parents who share my values and love for their families are my daily motivations.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
On the business side of things, I have been able to set the foundation for a global business that is quickly scaling, but on a heart level, my biggest accomplishment has been consistency in new users' responses. When I am onboarding a new parent, I often hear that this program is everything that they dreamt they'd have and more. This is what I truly take pride in when it comes to my business.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Taking risks often, making a dozen of highly important decisions on a daily basis, and finally balancing out this with my personal life.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be ready for it to take 3-5 years longer than you anticipate to get to stability.
- Choose something you genuinely care about because it will challenge you on all fronts, emotional, physical, and mental.
- Open your mind and flow. Getting obsessed with results will only run you down. It sounds cliche, but it's true; it is about the journey.
