What's your business, and who are your customers?
In 4 simple words - With HomeBaker kits, "Baking gets a lot better." HomeBaker kits come with all the pre-measured and organic ingredients required to make delicious cookies, cakes, and breads. No more messy flour-filled counters, endless bags of leftover ingredients, or cumbersome measuring of teaspoons and tablespoons, just the pure pleasure of baking and, most importantly, eating! Whether you want to bake for a loved one, or give an experiential gift or teach kids about food and healthy eating, HomeBaker kits work for bakers of all levels.
Tell us about yourself
It was the peak of the pandemic, and like every other person in the world, my buddy and I decided to give baking a shot. We finally found a coconut flour bread recipe that we liked and hit up the grocery store to find the ingredients. But alas, what we thought would be a quick trip, turned out to be 3 hours and cost us over $50. We had to buy a 1 kg bag of flour, a box of baking soda and baking powder, a bag of brown sugar and coconut flakes, measuring spoons, and cups, amongst countless other ingredients from 3 different stores. After that, it took us an hour to measure every ingredient, all the while dropping things on our tiny little studio apartment kitchen. Finally, we were left with one loaf of bread and 90% of leftover ingredients. It was at the end of that experience that HomeBaker was born! We decided to make this entire experience a pleasure and focus on the baking and eating part (our favorite!).
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Every time we get a photo from one of our Junior bakers, it put the biggest smile on our faces. Kids absolutely love the feeling of creating something that they can actually eat with their family, which gives them a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Those "Thank you" messages are definitely the biggest accomplishments.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is to spread the word about what you are doing and get people aware of your product. We continuously get repeat clients; however, the effort required to capture new clients is always a challenge.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be passionate about your idea - Don't get into something because it's trending or because others are doing it. Do it because you genuinely love the industry and believe in the idea.
- Trust your team and peers - It's easy to get carried away and think you know your baby the best. However, everyone comes with great ideas and a different perspective that should be respected.
- Get constant feedback - Keep innovating based on the feedback you get from your customers.
