Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Yeonsil Kang, CEO of Home Spritz, located in Calgary, AB, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Home Spritz, a software platform to empower private house cleaners to manage their business and is an easy hub for clients to find a long-term cleaner for their house. With us, clients don't worry about different cleaners shuffling through each time but can find high-quality cleaners that would care for the house as if it's their own and build long-term relationships with. We keep high-quality cleaners by giving them respect and paying a living wage. This keeps cleaners with us longer, and happy cleaners make happy clients.

Tell us about yourself

I was a frustrated customer from a different nationwide cleaning company. They sent different cleaners each time, and the quality was inconsistent. I was not happy with how many people got to know the door code into our house. Then, I started conversing with the cleaners and asking them why they kept changing. They answered it is because of the high turnover, and cleaners are always looking for different companies to move over as they are underpaid and under-respected. They had to move around to different companies to make their ends meet. Our founders decided to create a company where the cleaners are respected and paid fairly so that they can focus on high-quality service. We still have cleaners staying with us from when we started the business, and the partnership has been beyond amazing. It is rewarding to know we make a difference in the lives of the cleaners.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our happy team. I feel proud and confident with our staff and cleaners in the team. The people we have brought together and the awesome feedback we get are amazing. I know dollars aren't the most important part of our business, but knowing that our revenue keeps climbing each month is how much we are helping our cleaners improve their lives. Their happiness really improves the lives of the clients' homes they come into each day to reduce stress and let their clients focus on the same things that the cleaners care about: family, free time, and reduced stress.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I work too much. For any business owner, it is hard to find work-life balance as a business owner and not lose focus on self-care. There is no area in the business that doesn't get my touch, and work hours are often blurred while working through evenings and weekends. It is important to consciously dedicate time aside to care for myself and my family.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Grow revenue fast if your idea is novel. Without revenue, you can't say if you are doing a good or bad job. Seeing if your customers stay, leave, or recommend you is the easiest indicator if you are onto a new idea and the best way to grow and sustain your employees, partners, and vendors.
  2. Talk to your customers and talk to your partners, ALL THE TIME. They would tell you the best about what you are doing right, wrong, or can improve.
  3. Build the best product you can. For us, that is the best cleaners who are reliable, trustworthy, and hardworking. At the end of the day, they make or break us despite our focus as a software platform.
