Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jacqueline Kincer, Founder, and CEO of Holistic Lactation, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Holistic Lactation is a full-service breastfeeding company providing telehealth lactation appointments, a comprehensive online course + support community, and a line of specially-formulated herbal & dietary supplements for lactation. Our customers are moms who are pregnant and preparing to breastfeed or are already breastfeeding (whether nursing, pumping, or combo feeding).
Tell us about yourself
I am Jacqueline Kincer, IBCLC, RLC, CSOM, the founder + CEO of Holistic Lactation®. I'm a mom of two that got started on this journey when I had my son. Becoming a mom as a stockbroker, I was wildly unprepared for what breastfeeding was really like, and through the challenges I faced, I never gave up looking for answers. That determination led me down a path of wanting to ensure other moms wouldn't have to work so hard to figure out breastfeeding on their own (or give up because they didn't have the resources they needed to keep going). Seeing the difference we make every day in the lives of mothers and babies is all the motivation we need to keep showing up and serving families in their infant feeding & lactation goals.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As much as I'd love to say that my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is all of the families we've helped to breastfeed, there's another accomplishment that I love to celebrate! Our company team is comprised of moms who have experienced their own breastfeeding struggles and now get to work from home with a flexible schedule so they can meet their career goals while also being there for their families. I was very lucky when I started my career as a Lactation Consultant to be able to bring my children to work with me. The reason I left my career in finance is that it wasn't compatible with being a mom. So I'm incredibly proud that we are now an officially certified Women Owned Enterprise and truly walk our talk by creating a supportive & mom-friendly workplace.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner for me is learning to let go of doing all the things. I started out as a solopreneur and eventually reached a point of burnout. Even though I've grown my team (and am still growing it), there are still so many aspects of the business that I need to delegate to the rest of my team. It's a hard habit to break, and I'm a bit of a perfectionist. Thankfully my team is patient with me and always there to support the business and our clients & customers!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
For anyone looking to start a business today, I'd say to get connected with at least two other people that can be your mentors. There is a lot about running a business that you just won't know, and you'll have important questions that can be more easily answered with seasoned guidance or someone who can ask you the right questions. It's also important to be willing to take risks. You will absolutely make mistakes when running a business, and you can't be afraid of that happening. Being resilient, flexible, and believing in your ability to handle whatever challenge comes your way, is what will set your business apart from all the rest. Lastly, the only difference between a business that survives and one that fails is stamina. No matter what happens, just keep going--even if it means doing something differently than you originally imagined. Your business will never grow if you give up.
