Start and Grow a Small Compost Business - Hoffman Composting
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joe Hoffman, Owner of Hoffman Composting, located in Johnson City, TN, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own and operate a Tier 2 Composting Facility. I produce compost from food scraps, leaves, and woodchips and sell them to gardeners, farmers, developers, and landscapers.
Tell us about yourself
In the 1990s, I got a degree in Agronomy and worked with small-scale farmers in the United States, Mexico, and Ecuador. Those experiences opened my eyes to the importance of healthy soils and sustainable resource use. That importance and my fascination with the science of compost and soils continue to motivate me... and it's fun!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishments have been helping local gardeners and farmers increase their production and then helping other people get started in this industry.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things you'll face as a business owner is the stress that comes with the financial risks that you'll take.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
As an entrepreneur, it's vital that you manage your time well by prioritizing vital tasks, become a student of business financial statements, and continue to improve the quality of your products and services.
