Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah King, Founder of Hippie Momma's Apothecary, located in Bethlehem, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own Hippie Momma's Apothecary. My customers are usually people who prefer a more natural approach to skincare and want to feel good about what they are putting on their bodies.

Tell us about yourself

I started Hippie Momma in 2016 after making soap on my back patio for a few years. I worked in health care and was encouraged to make products for dry skin, so I created my body butters, and then it just grew from there. In 2020 I took an Aromatherapy course and became a Certified Professional Aromatherapist. This has helped me to remember how much I love the natural world and all of its gifts. I now have a line of face care products inspired by nature. I am motivated to make products that help to bring out your natural beauty while keeping products affordable. I want my customers to know how beautiful they are and to give them confidence through self-care.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In late 2020, during the COVID pandemic, I had a ribbon cutting for my new shop. It was done with the local Chamber of Commerce and was the first event they had, I had local caterers, and we set a tent up outside, and it was perfect!! It was so much work to do it safely, but it worked beautifully. People were ready to get out, and we were able to make it fun and safe. The Chamber talks about it often because it proved that it could be done well!! After that, people knew that Hippie Momma name! Also, I am in the process of changing my name to Hippie Momma's Apothecary from Hippie Momma Soap Co. I make so much more than soap that I wanted to world to know about it!!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it's time management. I've gotten much better with it, but I still try and do too much at a time. I still have so many products that I want to research and make.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The biggest tip I would say is to know your business. Read, ask questions and see where your heart takes you. Fully understand why you want to do this.
  2. Surround yourself with knowledgeable people, and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions.
  3. Do the business plan! I have had so many people tell me that they are so happy to see my plan. It makes it easier for me to wrap my head around my business and where it's going!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Owning my own business is incredibly rewarding. Being able to make my own rules and decisions is very empowering. It is hard work, but when someone meets me and says, "your Hippie Momma? I just love your products!" it makes it all worth wild!
