Capturing Your Magic - Hillary Lacy Photography
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hillary Lacy, Founder of Hillary Lacy Photography, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a wedding and couples photographer in the Phoenix valley, and we serve anyone who is getting married and wants creative, timeless photos of their day. We also have a huge clientele of families looking to get updated family photos!
Tell us about yourself
I graduated from ASU with a degree in economics and immediately realized I wanted to take my part-time job in photography full time, so I created my business, and here we are 6 years later! I enjoy seeing people on their best day- I am an extremely empathetic person, and I really feel so joyful when others are joyful- what better way to have a great day than photograph them at their weddings?
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I really pride myself on being reliable and having a great relationship with my clients. I have grown so much over the past six years in business, and it's crazy to look back on the girl I was six years ago, asking my friends if I could practice taking pictures of them to now supporting my family doing it.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Taxes- haha! They can be so confusing! Send me your CPAs!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start small and stay consistent. It's important to start your business with achievable goals and a plan to reach them. Think about what you can realistically accomplish with your current resources, and establish a timeline for reaching those goals, then work towards them every day! It's a hustle in the beginning, but it gets easier!
- Create a business plan. A detailed business plan is essential for success. It should include information such as your target market, objectives, and strategies for achieving them. It will also help you stay focused and organized.
- Network, network, network! Building relationships with customers, vendors, and other businesses in your industry is essential for success. Connect with potential customers, join networking groups, and attend industry events to get your name out there. You really have to get yourself out there, especially in the beginning. I still do sometimes!
