Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mia Lockhart, Owner of High Tide Wellness, located in Wolfville, NS, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
High Tide Wellness is a Massage Therapy in Matrix Repatterning clinic in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Our customers are health-conscious people looking for results-focused therapy. Matrix Repatterning is specifically for people suffering from persistent concussion symptoms or pain caused by impact injuries.
Tell us about yourself
I took Massage Therapy 20 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child because I knew I wanted a career that could work around my lifestyle, and I always loved helping people feel better. I started this clinic as a place for people to get great results and also to attract Massage Therapists here that can share their gifts and really make a difference. Our team loves their work, and we love working together.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would have to say the biggest accomplishment I have had as a business owner is hiring great people! I love our team and so do our customers!!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest part about being a business owner is making hard decisions, especially when it comes to a pandemic and risks around health for our staff as well as the community but also making decisions that you have to make for financial reasons or for your own health! I found it easier to do it sooner rather than delay things and communicate clearly with my team.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
I’d say the top three things for starting a business would be to set up your system, so you’re not spending so much time on admin, hire good people to take time to do that, and make it easy for your customers to buy from you or book from you. We have an online booking that takes care of all the accounting and messaging for a client, so it takes away a lot of admin time for me, and I love the system we use.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I do have to say running a wellness business, where you’re helping people every day feel better and live better, is very satisfying, and I’m also super thankful to be in a community that really supports small businesses, so I’d have to say pick something you love doing because even when you have to make hard decisions, it’s easier to stick to your values.
