Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cody Cundiff, Co-Owner of Hidden Trail Brewing, located in Garden City, KS, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Hidden Trail Brewing with my co-owners Michael Cole and Colin Williams. We are in the business of making beer and memories. This is a family and dog-friendly brewery located in a renovated barn in Garden City, Kansas. We accept all walks of life through our doors. It's a place for everyone to hang out while they enjoy different beers, mixed drinks, in-house made root beer and cream soda, arcade games, outdoor games, board games, and various events featuring Standup Comedy, Live Music, and more!

Tell us about yourself

As far as brewing goes, like most brewers, I started experimenting with home brewing as a hobby. My homebrew kit began on the stove and evolved into taking over most of the garage. I'd say what still motivates me in brewing is finding a new style/beer that people enjoy. As far as the brewery goes, what motivates us is trying to create a space where everyone feels welcome. A place for people who didn't feel like they had a place to hang out. We really wanted to create a space where everyone was equal. People to meet and make friends.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a following of supporters who, in my eyes, seem as equally invested in this space as us.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There is a saying I heard that goes, "if you want to know what it's like to be a small business owner, have you ever sat down and had a Redbull to relax?" I'd say the hardest thing would be the time. Whether it's physical or mental, you are always going to be there. What helps is making sure you have a business you are passionate about, which makes the time commitment a little easier on you. People can pick up on your passion.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You are always on call - It's an adjustment, but as long as it's something you love, it's not so bad.
  2. Follow your passion - if you're not passionate about what you're trying to create or sell, why should they care?
  3. Your supporters are so important. Be sure to make yourself available to them for their ideas. I've found that many times when one of your regulars is comfortable enough to present you with an idea, it's likely an idea other customers have discussed as well. Be open-minded to other ideas.
