What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Hey Cake This, and we make custom cakes and sweets for all occasions~! We specialize in nerdy and geeky-inspired sweets and creations!
Tell us about yourself
I didn't start out baking at first! It was my 2nd career choice! I originally graduated from Video Game Art and design in college back then as it was a long-time dream of mine to work and make video games. After graduating, I learned the video game industry was WAY different than how I thought it would be and decided not to pursue it... and I started baking as a hobby!
One day I thought, why not go to school for it? So after going to Vancouver Community College for Baking and Pastry art, I worked at a Bread bakery, then a Cupcake bakery. That is where I discovered my love of creating cakes and sweets. When I decided to leave the Cupcake bakery, I thought..... I like video games, and I like cakes..... so why not combine them together? … and that is how Hey! Cake This! came to be!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being on the Food Network was definitely one of my biggest accomplishments, as I would never have dreamed of ever being on a show~!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest part of being a business owner is managing everything with my business as well as keeping tabs on my own health and well-being. I have gotten better at it, but there are always things to do with a business, and it's non-stop!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
It is good to have a niche and to pursue it to the best of your abilities! Do your research, and ask people in the field of your business to get a good insight into what it is like in the industry. Never stop learning! All knowledge is good knowledge!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
You never know where life will take you~ Just go with the flow and see what happens! It can be surprising to see what you can do~!
