Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental healthcare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicole Herway, Founder of Herway Counseling, located in Murray, UT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Herway Counseling is a women's mental health business that focuses on healing relationship trauma and strengthening relationships.
Tell us about yourself
After years of doing generalized women's mental health treatment, I noticed many women struggled with similar attributes: people-pleasing, conflict avoidance, low self-esteem, hyper-productivity, impossible achievement standards for themselves, difficulty trusting their decisions, valuing the approval of others above their own opinion of themselves, fears of abandonment, and feeling overly responsible for others. I realized the common thread was unresolved attachment ruptures, so I started Herway Counseling to help women heal relationship trauma and develop healthy, lasting, fulfilling relationships with themselves and others.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I love running divorce support groups for women, so I love hearing from women who've stayed friends long after our groups finish. The ongoing support they give each other is so rewarding as a business owner because it reminds me why I do what I do.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being a single mom and running a thriving business is very busy, so it's hard for me to stay on top of all the "behind the scenes" parts of a business. I wish my training had included more business classes, so I'm looking into taking some specifically for private practice. I am grateful to be in private practice, though, because it allows me to have the freedom over my schedule, marketing, and client relationships, which is worth the work of running my own business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do your research before you start. Research your potential market, start networking, and get the proper business footing to get off on a good start.
- Make daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals and hold yourself accountable.
- Hire people to do work that would take away from your time doing what you do best. At first, I tried to do my billing and accounting, but it's been much more cost-effective to hire someone else to do their specializations so I can focus on doing mine.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
For any business, my top advice is to surround yourself with supportive people who believe in you. For me, I have great family members and friends who encourage me, supportive colleagues who help me problem solve, and best of all, clients who daily remind me of the "why" I'm in the industry and why owning my own business is definitely worth it.
