Connect, Inspire, Empower - her Soul Shot
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kyla Lane, founder of her Soul Shot, located in Edmonton, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
her Soul Shot is a platform and community that connects, inspires, and empowers women in sports. Our mission is to help all girls and women in sports take their shot, whether that's playing at any level, working in sports, starting a business, coaching, being a fan, or however your passion for sports presents itself. There is no right way to be involved in sports, and her Soul Shot ensures women see the possibilities for themselves within sports and helps them connect with the women's sports community, opportunities, and resources so they can take their shot in sports.
Tell us about yourself
At four years old, I fell in love with the game of hockey. I grew up playing every sport I could, but I didn't always feel like I belonged in sports, whether that was on the ice or field or working in the sports industry. That sparked my desire to make sport a more welcoming space, especially for women.
Through sports, I've been able to find my purpose, accept myself, and gain the confidence I wouldn't have without sports. I want to make sure other girls and women see the possibilities for themselves and reach their soul's potential through sports, so they never have to doubt their place in the game.
Starting her Soul Shot and getting to connect with women in sports around the world is a dream come true. The women's sports community is so special, and it's an honour to be able to wake up every day and see women in sports taking their shots.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating a community. I've been so fortunate to be able to connect with so many incredible people through sports, and now I get to build a space for others to do the same. Without our community and the people who support us, we have nothing as business owners. Thankfully, I get to gain just as much from our community as they gain from us.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The everyday things that people don't see. With social media and people seeing the end result of products, services, launches, etc., owning a business can seem like a highlight reel. And at times it is, but it's the constant feeling of being "on" because you're so passionate about your business that you can't turn your mind "off," the time and energy of having to learn each part of your business (and do it yourself until you can afford to hire it out), the emotional rollercoaster, the sacrifices you make, the hours you put in behind the scenes, and feeling like you've got to keep 25 balls in the air at one time. It can be incredibly overwhelming, but it's equally, if not more so, rewarding.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
1) Be passionate about what you're doing. Starting a business for the purpose of making money, having freedom, and being your own boss is great, but your passion and "why" need to be above those, or you'll struggle to make it through the journey to those secondary things.
2) Figure out what works for you. When I first started, I absorbed every book, podcast, and tip from other entrepreneurs that I could, and I thought I had to implement it all to be successful. But not everyone's version of success is the same, and there isn't one road map to success. Learning to leave behind the advice that doesn't work for you is just as important as learning to implement advice that does. If you're not doing it in a way that works for you and what success looks like for you, you'll burn out before you reach your potential. Do it YOUR way.
3) Stop worrying about competing. In business especially, we're taught to worry about our competition. If you're too focused on "beating" your competition, you'll lose sight of who you are and what you bring to the table. There's going to be people doing similar things as you, but no one can do it the way you do it. That's the magic your business has - embrace it.
