Helping young people build lives - Emeric Le Morvan
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey by launching an education business but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emeric Le Morvan, of Life Builders based in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
What's your business and who are your customers?
We are an education company that helps young people design and build their best life.
We do this through three programs: Mentoring 1-on-1, Game of Life Online Course, and Virtual Camps.
Our trainings and mentorship give young people a chance to step into early adulthood with direction, purpose, and a mindset that will set them up for lifelong happiness and fulfilment. We work with pre-teens, teens, and young adults who want to excel at school and get started on building an extraordinary life.
Tell us about yourself
Today, I have the honour of running my own business, working my own hours, getting paid to create and teach courses on personal development.
I get to inspire people each day, and help individuals level up at this game called life. I’m doing work that’s meaningful to me and work that I feel is important in the world right now. But it wasn't always this way.
There was a time in my life when I myself felt lost and broken. I couldn't figure out how to make sense of my life. I couldn't figure out how to piece together my life. I came from a really wonderful family, but I just didn't quite see the greatness in Emeric.
In school, I struggled a lot. I didn't feel smart, and I struggled to meet my own expectations and those of my teachers. On the surface, it seemed that everything was ok, but I was struggling on the inside. I felt like I was never good enough. I studied and worked hard, and still, I struggled. One day, during university, I hit a wall. I became sick, depressed, and ready to quit.
I turned to doctors for help, who directed me to psychiatry. I remember walking down the halls of the hospital thinking: "I cannot believe this is happening." I was put on medication and labeled with a mental illness that I didn't agree with, and I didn't feel that my doctors new me very well. That was a dark period in my life.
Sometimes in life though you need a breakdown to have a breakthrough. My breakthrough came when I stopped relying on others for answers and instead took charge of my life. I used to think school would teach me how to put my life together. But after graduating from university, I realized that school is a great place to learn WHAT to learn (Math, History, Science, Engineering...), but not great at showing you how all that you're learning fits into the bigger picture of your life.
Realizing this, I embarked on a personal development journey, asking myself questions like: "What is the education that I wish I had received?" - I explored my curiosity and studied everything I could get my hands on about ‘how to learn’, the human body and mind, spirituality, physics. I was on a quest to better understand the world we live in, and gain clarity on how to put my life together. I gained a new perspective on life. I began to be more proactive about designing and building the life that I wanted to live.
As a result, my confidence and my life began to improve. I found myself. I now know who I am and I'm excited to live my life to the fullest. And that's why today I spend so much time teaching people how to improve their ability to play the game of life. I teach individuals how to stand in their greatness and own their life. I help them gain clarity on how they choose to live, and empower them with practical tools, strategies and frameworks they can use to build a successful, happy life.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Inspiring people each day, helping them level up in life is very rewarding. My service is quite unique, and I'm proud of myself for having the courage to follow through with the vision I have for my business.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As a solopreneur, you have to play many roles. There is a lot to think about, and it can be difficult to wrap your head around how all the pieces of the business fit together, especially if it's your first business. It can be overwhelming at times. It's important to keep in mind why you started the business, and keep re-committing when times get tough, because it inevitably will.
What are the top 3 tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
1) Become very good at learning new skills. Be curious and ready to learn new things.
2) Reach out and build relationships.
3) Know the taxes you have to pay!
