Healthy Starts With Hello - Hello Beverages

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tom Bushkie, co-founder, and CEO of Hello Beverages, located in Milwaukee, WI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The business is hellowater, and our customers are people of all ages that are looking for simple solutions to improve their health. It's as easy as opening the bottle and enjoying the great taste and benefits of rapid hydration, gut health, and immune defense.

Tell us about yourself

I became a certified nutritionist in 2006 to help individuals with their health and weight management goals. It became apparent that it was hard for most people to get certain nutrients on a daily basis, like chicory root fiber, so I decided to create a product that would deliver the nutrients in a simple and delicious way. What motivates me is also simple, it's the customers! When customers write or call and tell us how hellowater has helped them lose 50lbs or decreased their A1C and are no longer diabetic is an amazing feeling. Other customers tell us that it is the only water they will drink because it tastes so good, and they just don't prefer bland plain water.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating a brand that is nationally recognized! Growing up in a small town of 3,000 people to creating products that are sold throughout the country and at some of the nation's largest retailers is a big accomplishment. Thinking back on all the work that had to be done to get to this point, from the idea alone to formulating the products, structuring the company, building the team, and executing the plan, provides a tremendous amount of pride and accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The behind-the-scenes day-to-day stress. In a small company, each team member has a lot of responsibilities, and with so much to do to keep the product on shelves and online so customers can continue to reap the benefits, it takes a toll on your mind and body. Most people only see the positive news and all the things going right, and many don't see the sleepless nights, hard decisions, and financial stress that comes with growing a business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start a business that would be happy running and growing even if you didn't get paid. If you can have that mentality, you'll be successful. You'll wake up excited and ready to go each day.
  2. Know your purpose. The purpose is the reason you get up each day. The purpose is why consumers engage with your brand and support it. The purpose will lead the business in the right direction. Knowing and clearly stating your purpose to your consumers and your team is vital for success.
  3. Start small and prove your concept, and as you grow, hire people that are smarter than you and complement your weaknesses. At first, you'll have to do parts of the job you won't enjoy, but as you grow, you'll attract people that complement your skills, and you'll be so happy to delegate those responsibilities.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Success is a mentality. Stay positive, fill your mind with good thoughts and information, and surround yourself will people that lift you up.
