Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robert D'Ambrosio, co-founder, and CEO of Helias Oils, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Helias Oils is a pure essential oils brand with a mission to bring natural remedies in a simple, easy-to-use way. Our team loves essential oils but has always found the uses and benefits to be confusing and complicated. With Helias, we really want to make it clear how to best use essential oils and present them in a colorful and beautiful way. All our essential oils are categorized in our four core categories: Sleep, Calm, Energy, and Passion so that our guests can immediately understand the main benefit. When selecting a new oil, we work directly with a certified perfumist to source our lab-tested oils from the best countries all over the world. This whole process is done out of our distribution headquarters in Kentucky, where 90% of our supply chain footprint is local.

Tell us about yourself

After working in corporate retail for over a decade, I really wanted to find a way to take the experience I had gained and bring out a brand that incorporated the best of what I loved about all my retail experiences. That idea developed as I met people with a similar interest and dedication to a natural wellness routine. I am an explorer at heart, so I'm motivated by finding the best possible solutions, with a commitment to natural products.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think the biggest accomplishment at Helias has been the ability to get essential oils in front of different demographics. One of the main reasons we started Helias was to diversify the way essential oils are perceived and who has access to using them in their daily routine. One of my favorite things about essential oils is their benefit on mental wellbeing; this is something really important to us and has become our social mission.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think one of the hardest things is staying focused. There are so many opportunities and directions to take a business, so it's really deciding what matters most to you and staying the course until you have enough information to make a decision.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. There is no perfect way to start your business; just get it going and adjust along the way.
  2. Pay attention to your mental health and ask for help, it can sometimes be lonely, but you would be surprised how much people want to help.
  3. All problems have some sort of solution, so don't over-stress.
