Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Heather Claus, owner of Flexible Bodies Training and Therapy, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I inspire people to advocate for their health on all levels, from teens who aspire to perform high-level athletics to the grandmother who wants to be able to play with their grandchildren without pain or pharmaceutical aid. Health is an inside job.

Tell us about yourself

When I was in high school, I wanted to work with athletes. It was the dream. I didn't, however, choose the right courses in school to make that happen. I worked for many years in the arts until I woke up one day and said, "that's it. I'm going back to school to learn how to train people and help them be healthier". I was 32 when I made this decision. It's been a long ride with a huge learning curve. The learning never stops, and I always try to be better, show up better for myself and for my clients. The motivation is health. I see how our healthcare system is broken. People need to advocate for themselves, but they really don't know how to. My mission is to help them, teach them, inspire them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm a single mother and have been for over ten years. I've had zero support and really have done everything on my own. So being able to slowly build a business to now being a solo entrepreneur on the verge of building that up AND being 100% active in my son's life is my greatest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

No support. Everything relies on you all of the time. I am still learning to ask for help.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Get help from the beginning and accept that it is terrifying and rewarding at the same time. Everyone will tell you not to because it's not "safe," but these fears are their own fears. Embrace the passion and fear and grow from there.
