Become a Parent - Heartland Surrogacy

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Monica Villa, Co-Founder of Heartland Surrogacy, located in Des Moines, IA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our surrogacy agency supports our clients in their family-building journeys. We work with surrogates within the Midwest and on the West Coast. Our intended parents are from across the US.

Tell us about yourself

The business was born from our co-founder's wish for local support in her personal surrogacy journeys. I originally signed on to assist with copy and technology, but I was inspired by the mission and quickly joined her as an owner. Since becoming a parent, I am motivated by the joy my children bring me every day. It's such a privilege to help others in their journeys!

I've also learned what an incredible accomplishment this gift can be for surrogates. I've seen our surrogates be empowered by their journey, which motivates me to build services that fully support them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is the pivot from my previous career as a scientist. I had so much business knowledge to gain, as well as the ins and outs of the surrogacy world. Business ownership requires much ongoing education, and I feel confident having successfully gone through the learning curve.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It is challenging for me not to take on too many projects at once! As a business owner, I oversee multiple areas and must be mindful of organizing my tasks appropriately.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait too long to hire support. Build this into your original budget to find people who will make you additional revenue and/or save you time. Plus, learning that you don't have to do it all yourself (no matter how amazing you are!) is an important lesson to learn.
  2. Prepare for the downtimes. Businesses can really go through "feast or famine" cycles.
  3. Do good. As business owners, we can influence our communities and economy. Learn about social justice issues that pertain to your products and/or services. Implement strategies to make a difference through your business.
