Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joni Berg, Co-founder and CEO of KitsKitchen, located in Vancouver, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We make super clean, healthy, plant-based products that never use additives or preservatives.

Tell us about yourself

It started as a personal want! I love eating healthy and view food as a way to nourish the body. Kitskitchen was founded because my friend and I couldn't buy a healthy, clean, and great-tasting soup on the market, so we made them! Our products are for people on the go, but we don't want to neglect great tasting food that your body needs to thrive.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think seeing how big the reach and brand is now is amazing to see! What started in my mom's kitchen now feeds over 250,000 meals a year to people who love our brand and products. At first, the only people who bought it we knew personally! Now, when I meet regular customers and find out I am a co-founder, it is always a fun surprise for both sides.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Every business has its unique struggles and ups and downs. My biggest struggle has been separating business from my personal life. I think I would work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, if I could. I truly love working.

However, since starting a family, watching my son grow and be present with him has been very important. Juggling both has taught me how to compartmentalize and be incredibly efficient with my time. On the business side, my biggest struggle has been cash flow management. My background is not financing, so this has been a learning curve for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be sure to ask around and meet with people currently in the industry. Gather information and ask lots of questions.
  2. Get someone involved and excited about the business that has an accounting or finance background. They will be your go-to for lots of advice!
  3. Aim to focus on something you are passionate about. I don't say that to sound typical, but you can sell anything you are truly passionate about. It creates an authentic voice and brand in the company.
