Heal Your Relationship With Your Body - Healthy By Emily

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Oschmann, Owner of Healthy By Emily, located in Waterford, WI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Healthy By Emily is a private practice that treats eating disorders while using a weight-inclusive approach. It provides all individuals, regardless of body size, access to eating disorder care with a dietitian. My typical customer suffers from either a diagnosed eating disorder, has disordered eating behaviors, or is working on making peace with food and their body.

Tell us about yourself

From a young age, I struggled with finding my own identity in my body. I received many messages from family, peers, others around me, and the media on why my body was a problem. This caused me to develop behaviors around food and my body that were not normal as I continued to try and fit into a world that wasn't built for me.

This dysfunctional relationship with food and my body led me to pursue a degree in dietetics so that I could finally get the body I wanted. It was in the very last year of my bachelor's degree that I realized that what I was pursuing was the problem, and I didn't want to contribute to the harm that society and health care were contributing to. This is what motivated me to start a private practice as a registered dietitian to help those harmed by society and struggling with disordered eating. This continues to motivate me daily as I know I'm helping individuals heal their relationship with their body.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is seeing the progress and growth my clients make every day. I love getting to see my clients step towards a better relationship with their body and remove the guilt around food.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Finding your niche. Most of us want to help and serve everyone - however, that's not always attainable.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't let a lack of experience stop you from creating a business. Regardless if you're fresh out of college or have been in the industry for years, you will continue to grow and learn every day!
  2. Find a group of like-minded business owners not only for accountability but for networking as well.
  3. If you're building a website, start on WordPress. Many individuals I know have started other platforms and had to switch to WordPress after realizing they couldn't do the things they wanted to do with their websites.
