If You Have a Spine, We Can Help! - Dr. Tyler Kong
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tyler Kong, founder of Health + Healing Chiropractic, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
At Health & Healing Chiropractic, we run one of the fastest-growing chiropractic clinics in Mississauga and serve communities in surrounding cities as well. Our customers range from newborns to seniors. If you have a spine, we can help! We are passionate about chiropractic because of the lives that have transformed through it. We are incredibly grateful to be able to witness some amazing transformations because we specialize in spinal correction and wellness care for the human spine. And by identifying the root cause of someone's health problem(s), we can successfully heal the patient rather than just deal with their symptoms.
Tell us about yourself
Working in the art of healing has always been an interest of mine, especially from a natural standpoint which is ironic because I grew up with a strong medical family. But there was just something inside of me that knew there was more to health than prescribed medication and surgery. There just had to be. When I discovered chiropractic, it was a match made in heaven. Then when I discovered corrective chiropractic, a specialized technique used to correct spinal misalignments, I further fell in love with chiropractic. What motivates me are the miracles (and I don't use that word lightly). Lives are being transformed, and some are literally saved through chiropractic care. For me, chiropractic is not a job or a career but a lifestyle. I never plan on retiring unless my body tells me it's time!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
In the summer of 2020, we officially opened Health + Healing Chiropractic. A world-class clinic dedicated to helping people who wanted spinal health and wanted to get well again naturally from the inside out. Without question, opening up this clinic would be my biggest accomplishment as a business owner.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I am a chiropractor, not a business owner. So the hardest things that come with being a small business owner are learning all the other things about running a business that I didn't learn in school. As a business owner, you're the marketing department, the sales department, finance, human resource department, and more! So learning how to grow a business in times that keep on changing would be the hardest and also the most rewarding part of being a small business owner. It goes hand in hand - hard work pays off!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- First and foremost, find a mentor. Go shadow as many businesses as you can and learn from them. Then when you find one that you really 'jive' with, volunteer or work for them. Learn how they run their business from the inside out. There is no need to try to reinvent the wheel. Find out what makes a business successful and replicate it in your own way.
- Never stop learning. The moment you think you have it all is the moment things will start to go downhill. Never think you have it all together and always find out what else can be improved. There's always something!
- When your business grows to a point where you start to hire additional help, don't just hire someone who has a similar personality to yours because a successful small business requires diverse minds and strengths. Using something like a DISC profiler can help get a general idea of what a person is like. Hire someone who is the opposite of you so that your strengths combined can cover all the bases.
