Establish Healthy Behaviors - Health Coach Megan
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Little, Founder of Health Coach Megan, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine and a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach. I help people establish healthy behaviors through motivational interviewing, education, and natural medicine. My customers are primarily women who are chronically stressed, tired, and burnt out and have been spinning their wheels trying to get healthy, moving from one wellness fad to the next.
Tell us about yourself
I don't operate as a primary care physician, even though I am trained and licensed as one. I became a Naturopathic Doctor because I loved the approach and philosophy. One of our core principles is Doctor as Teacher, which guides my practice and life mission. I prefer to work with patients one-on-one, creating sustainable behavior changes and building a healthy foundation for life. Those meaningful conversations don’t happen in 15 minutes. I am motivated to continue to show up for my clients because I see how much they need interaction, support, and unconditional positive regard when endeavoring to make these changes.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner would be stepping out in an area where there isn’t a lot of knowledge about what I do. In North America (USA and Canada), there are approximately 8k Naturopathic Doctors. In the world, there are approximately 7,400 National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coaches. I think there are even fewer that are both.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, there is not just one hard thing! As an introvert, though, I would say continuing to put myself out there is in the top five. I don’t like being the center of attention. So putting myself out there when I need to give talks, lectures, network, or create social media/marketing is difficult.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Ask for help – anywhere you might need it. Website design, marketing, and or CPA. It might cost money, but it will be worth it and probably save you time in the long run. If finances are tight in the beginning, make a list and see if you can nail down your absolutes – what you really need and don’t need.
- There are seasons in business – Sometimes, you have a lot of growth, and other times things feel pretty dormant. It’s okay. It doesn’t mean that you are doing the wrong thing. Take the time to evaluate what is working and what isn’t, and see if you need to shift.
- Everything is going to take longer than you think it will – so be patient with yourself and the process.
