Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicole Nielsen, co-founder of Happy Place Candle Co., located in Dripping Springs, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Happy Place Candle Co. believes that scent helps creates memories. Light a candle from us and let it take you back to a special place in time. Our small-batch, hand-poured candles are all-natural soy wax, high-quality essential fragrance oils, with a hemp wick for a longer, cleaner burn.
Tell us about yourself
We are two sisters that decided one day we were going to make candles for Christmas gifts. We've always loved a good candle and thought it would be fun. After several years of people asking, we decided to just go for it.
We were determined to make a clean-burning candle that would still give off an elevated fragrance and create a warm, inviting environment. Our scents are based on memories that we have from our childhoods, trips we've taken, and events we loved.
In 2019 I moved to Dripping Springs, Texas, and began to expand our business. Danae makes and attends events in Nebraska. We talk almost every day, and even though we are apart, it seems like we are closer than ever.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The biggest accomplishment we have as business owners are juggling our business in 2 locations.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest part about being a business owner is, keeping up with ALL the things. There's always something to do, and prioritizing what's the most important is hard. Sometimes you have to say no to things or miss out on important events. Luckily, we have each other and an awesome family that supports and helps us out when we need them.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Surround yourself with amazing people that help motivate you and uplift you. I won't lie, it gets hard, and some days you'll want to quit. These are the people that will push you through the hard times.
- Find a balance in your day-to-day work. You are no good to anyone if you burn yourself out.
- Learn from your mistakes. We are all human, and as business owners, we constantly have to learn something new. Mistakes help us grow.
