Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hannah Tabert, Founder of Hannah T. Photography, located in Langford, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a photographer for people who embrace real life. I'm here for the families who love playing together in the mud, neurodivergent folx who own their uniqueness, and LGBTQ+ individuals who are living their lives with joy and pride!

Tell us about yourself

I became a photographer by falling into it. A photoshoot with a friend in high school made me realize what a profound craft it was, and then I just kept shooting. I do what I do because of the amazing people I get to meet through this work. The stories I get to tell. I love helping people explore who they are through photography so much that I've even started an identity coaching business that combines personality exploration with photography. That is where my passion has ultimately led me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say that my biggest accomplishment as a business owner thus far is the fact that I've had my photography business for over 10 years now. It's changed a lot over the years, but it's always been there, even as all the other pieces of my life have changed and moved on. I'm really proud of the fact that I've built something that I want to continue building.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is always being at risk of rejection or failure. Even though those things are transient and don't define the whole story, having a campaign or sale not work out like you hoped or receiving criticism from someone are both constant possibilities just because of the fact that you are serving the public. This factor can make it hard to put oneself out there sometimes, but if you want to succeed, you have to keep getting out there every day, learning and growing from every encounter you have.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your best to find the intersection of passion, market demand, and action. Make sure that you're passionate enough either about just building a business or the specific business you're building so that you don't get bored quickly. But also make sure that there is a real demand for what you're offering.
  2. And then, lastly, don't look for the perfect idea to the detriment of actually taking action. The best way to find out if something works is to just try it, so if you can mix that in with enough passion and enough demand, you'll be on a good track to success.
  3. Oh, and for your own sake, prioritize your mental health!
