Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kyle Hierholzer, Owner of Hand in Health Massage Therapy, located in Syracuse, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business, Hand in Health Massage Therapy, primarily offers Therapeutic Massage focused on chronic and acute pain care management. We also provide Fitness Instruction (one-on-one personal training, Yoga, and martial arts) and Acupuncture. Most of our patients are seeking pain relief, sports recovery, or are part of a pain care management program.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a Massage Therapist for nearly 12 years and a Personal Trainer for seven years. After completing Massage Therapy School, I opened a home office while working at a Pain Management Clinic with a team of medical professionals. Seven years ago, I decided to focus on my own business and grow a team of massage and fitness professionals that can help patients with more than just a relaxation massage. I am motivated by the connections we have with our patients and how we are able to help them reduce or eliminate their pain and increase their activities of daily living.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is growing an amazing team of Massage Therapists and Fitness professionals who consistently put their patients first and are dedicated to helping them improve their life through massage, Acupuncture, and/or fitness training. Our team has grown to over 20 health professionals, who are the most amazing team of people to work side by side with on a daily basis.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is juggling all that has to be completed on the business side with patient care. While I love working with my patients all day, it has become harder and harder to get everything done on the administrative side and making the transition to seeing fewer patients so I can help grow the businesses has been difficult.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be prepared to work hard. Starting and growing a business will take an enormous amount of time and energy and sometimes some personal sacrifice. Work hard, don't slack off but find a balance with your personal life.
  2. Don't just hire anyone. Growing a team and bringing people in to work with you should be the most careful thing you can do. Choose people who are better than yourself, bring unique skills and backgrounds, understand your vision, and will work well with others in a team environment.
  3. Know when to delegate. It's impossible to do everything yourself, especially as you grow and get bigger. Find the right business partners like lawyers, accountants, etc. Find a Business Manager who can support you and your vision and use your team to highlight their strengths to help you out.
