Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hal King, founder and owner of Public Health Innovations LLC., located in Saint Simons Island, Georgia, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We help businesses develop new products, use cases, and market share for products that prevent infectious diseases and improve public health. We also consult with the government to influence public health strategy. We lead the food industry in the thought leadership area of best practices to prevent foodborne diseases via Public Health Innovations and our sister business, Active Food Safety LLC.

Tell us about yourself

I worked to get my Ph.D. in the science of infectious disease prevention. I worked for many years at the CDC, with the WHO, at Emory School of Medicine, and even the US Army Reserves on projects to develop new knowledge on how to prevent them. I went to work at a food business during my service to the Army as a "place holder" in my career. I found that I loved the business of public health, where I could use my knowledge, relationships, and resources to help large enterprise food businesses implement better management programs and systems to prevent foodborne diseases from their restaurants and manufacturing facilities (thus impacting the public health).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping businesses develop new products and/or use cases (e.g., Ecolab, GOJO/Purell, Sani Professional) via Public Health Innovations LLC and helping the food industry to execute food safety management systems using these products via Active Food Safety LLC.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Business administration and management.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Choose a business that has a market need that will enable growth in sales.
  2. Ensure it aligns with your passion to meet this need with innovation.
  3. Ensure it aligns with your knowledge, experience, and strengths to build a business from this.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

This is the time to start a new business and answer to yourself vs. working for a business you have contributed all you can to or learned all you can from. Leverage all your relationships for help (they will help) and change the world for the better.
