Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Allison Kam, a freelance hairstylist based in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is a hair-a-py (lol). I'm being funny, but not really... In short, I'm a freelance hairstylist specializing in haircutting and event styling. My clients are from all walks of life, seeking to feel amazing after an appointment with me : )
Tell us about yourself
I've had the pleasure of this being my career for over 17 years and 6 years of entrepreneurship. I went into hairstyling because of my own struggles with self-confidence and not knowing myself. I love to help others feel their truest self through their hair. I'm deeply motivated by connection and helping others feel empowered to embrace themselves wholeheartedly. Hair is one of the greatest avenues to uncover deep insecurities and challenge the beauty norms in today's world.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My greatest accomplishment has been to be of service to others. Supporting my clients through their big events in life, whether it be simply cutting their hair after a life change or a union of marriage.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for me as a business owner is trying to balance doing the work that I'm not so strong in— administrative work, and figuring out how to charge clients for the work that most can't see. Energy is an invisible feeling, and to find a currency for that is always hard to explain and price.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be willing to learn every day. Find patience for yourself and others.
- Breathe through the challenges because everything is a moment, and you'll get there!
- If it gives you anxiety, listen to your body and pause before making decisions. Working with people can be challenging. Make sure you feel you can be yourself so you can provide the best experience for them.
