Holistic Beauty Esthetician - Hair Apropos
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenna LaMaina, manager of Hair Apropos, located in Chalfont, PA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a third-generation in our luxury salon and spa for over 52 years. My father served in the US navy in Vietnam and started cutting hair after his father suddenly passed. My sister went to college and earned her degrees in education and finance. My experiences in New York City in the financial industry prepared me to work with clients and serve them throughout the years. My rapport and dedication to customer service separate us from many other businesses, and our attentiveness to each client shows. They are like family.
Tell us about yourself
Having survived 911 and walking away from one of the most significant experiences of my lifetime, I decided to change careers and figure out Where I wanted to spend my next 30 years working. Work isn't work when you love what you do. I decided to learn everything I could about the health of nails and skin and do them differently, with health my first priority. I get excited about those who I work with and love training those who are beginning their career. We can learn from those around us. I try to stay up to the latest techniques and keep learning about my craft.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as an owner is getting our salon computerized. I know that sounds silly; it literally has saved our business in the early day since 2003. I also think my biggest accomplishment personally is that I have had clients for over 20 years and counting. I enjoy seeing the legacy my family has begun and can't wait to see what's in store for the future.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things to overcome is seeing employees come and go. It's hard when you have dedicated so much time to training. However, that is the nature of this business. You just need to show up and hope your work ethic transfers to the new team members.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Always show up and be positive.
- Dress for the occasion and look your best.
- Perseverance - never air your dirty laundry but be transparent with your staff. Nurture them and yourself.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
