Restore Your Gut, Make Peace With Food - Hackett Health

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & nutrition but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jacquelyn Hackett, Founder of Hackett Health, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a holistic dietitian and functional movement personal trainer. I help others tired of dieting improve their health by changing their habits and creating sustainable, lasting change. We focus on gut health, metabolism, enhancing relationships with our body and food, and joyful and pain-free movement.

Tell us about yourself

I became a dietitian and created my practice for reasons similar to those of many other dietitians. It started in college with digestive health issues, which led to learning about "healthy" eating. It then developed into disordered eating, excessive exercise, and inadequate recovery. I was constantly tired and under-eating, but I did not understand why. After college, I became a personal trainer, which I loved except for the constant pressure to look a certain way.

Body insecurities and a lack of confidence started, along with continued overtraining and under-fueling. In grad school, I discovered intuitive eating. I had to dig deep, heal my traumas, learn to meditate, read ALL the self-help books, and heal my relationship with my body and food. I am now committed to helping others figure out how to juggle life's challenges one step at a time so they, too, can live life to the fullest.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is tied to the success of my clients. Every day I get to do what I love: help others improve their lives. My goal is to continue to reach as many people as possible.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

At first, you want to do everything yourself and say yes to every opportunity, which is fine, especially when you are first starting. But at a certain point, you need to learn to say no, so you don't stretch yourself too thin. And you need to know how to delegate and hire people, even if it's a virtual assistant helping out a few hours a week. It makes a huge difference.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a plan with goals.
  2. You have to start. Once your plan is created, you need to do it! Don't talk about it. Get going, even if it's just 1 hour a week until you start building momentum.
  3. Failure is the key to success. You're going to fail. It's a given. But you only indeed fail when you quit, so keep trying!
