Making Health & Performance Sustainable - Habitually Holistic

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Siri DeMarche, Founder of Habitually Holistic, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a sports nutritionist (CISSN) and athletic performance coach. I work one-on-one or with teams of athletes aged 18-30.

Tell us about yourself

After reverse engineering my way out of several health issues as a kid (I studied Molecular and Cellular Human Biology in college to do so), I realized how much power we each have over our health and longevity and how simple nutrition and lifestyle changes can have such a tremendous impact.

I love working with athletes because of the passion and drive they bring to the table - to them, the focus is on performance and not, "oh, I want to lose 30 lbs by x date." When I work with athletes, I really focus on their long-term health and not just their short-term performance, ensuring sustainable and repeatable performance in the process. I feel like when it comes to health, athletes are a greatly underserved population as many coaches overlook the long-term health of an athlete (or don't understand what that looks like) in pursuit of short-term performance.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Watching athletes break barriers and set personal records that they had previously thought to be impossible through implementing nutrition and lifestyle strategies that are also applicable to other areas of their life. Typically, I see that as athletes succeed in their athletic endeavors, their success in other areas like school work, relationships, etc., also increases. Especially with my younger athletes, this goes such a long way toward improving their confidence.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Marketing! haha, I'm TERRIBLE at putting myself/my services out there. Luckily I have a really amazing network of clients, and most of my new clients come from referrals. Still, this is something I definitely need to focus on.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Look to help people that are in the same predicament you were once in. You can connect with and speak to their pain points from a place of true understanding and service.
  2. In all things - be it business marketing or client plan adherence, consistently good is better than occasionally great.
  3. You have to enjoy the process. No one likes setbacks, but they make you more resilient to make your goals happen, and when your goals do happen, you appreciate them more.
