Solutions for a Stressful Tech Filled World-Habit Disruption

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kevin Munhall, founder of Habit Disruption, located in Hoboken, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an Alexander Technique and Functional Breathwork instructor who helps people reduce anxiety, build resilience to stress, avoid burnout and relieve tension. My work is part relief, part resilience building, and I help clients relieve tension, improve posture, retrain their breathing and learn simple frameworks for moving through the world more mindfully.

Tell us about yourself

I got into this work after the injuries I experienced during my decade as a Broadway dancer. I kept getting injured and put back together again over and over, but very little was ever done to change the behavior that was the root cause of my injuries until I discovered the Alexander Technique. Despite growing up an athlete and decades of performance training, I was amazed to find that I was so unaware of all the tension habits I had holding myself up all day. Making these shifts finally empowered me to take control over how I moved and felt long-term, and I now teach it to help others do the same.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am very proud of the partnerships and connections I've made with companies and universities like Avocado Green Mattress, TouchCare Health, Vassar College, & American University, in which I have been able to bring this work to their employees, students, and customers. As our world grows increasingly digital, we will all need help dealing with the effects screens have on our minds, bodies, and nervous systems, and I am honored to be a part of the solution.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Communication can be challenging in a digital world. Every client responds best to a different method of connection, and it can be difficult to get buy-in prior to connecting in person and forming a relationship.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Reach out to anyone and everyone you know about what you do, and don't take any "no" personally.
  2. Conquer your networks and community before trying to conquer the entire internet.
  3. Set boundaries for when you are off the clock so that every waking moment doesn't turn into business hours.
