Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Rogers, Founder of Gubbins, located in Guildford, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sharing knowledge and keeping your files tidy can be a nightmare if you don't have a good system in place. I work with freelancers and small businesses to get their processes in order so they can focus on doing the things they love. I do this by building templates, creating video tutorials, and consulting with teams directly.

Tell us about yourself

As a freelance designer, I found that I enjoyed the admin as much as the work itself. Things like creating handover documents and teaching people through video calls. I created Gubbins as a space where I could share my skills and learn with more people outside of my more regular design work.

I love that I get to choose what I work on and who I want to help. There's also so much to learn and try; I feel like I pick up something new with every project.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I use Notion a lot with my projects. Earlier this year, I became a certified Notion Consultant. There aren't many of us, and the process to get there wasn't easy, but I'm proud to be a part of that group now!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Especially as a solo business owner, motivation can be tricky. There are a lot of things to do to keep a business going, and there's a lot that is outside of your control. I always keep track of the small wins so I can remind myself why I started in the first place.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small and try plenty of things. You won't get it right immediately, and that's part of the process. You'll only know what works by discarding the things that don't.
  2. Listen to your market. When I started Gubbins, I was focused on a single purpose, but I found it hard to find customers that aligned with my view. It's easier now that I've listened to what people need help with rather than just doing what I think will work.
  3. Be a bit weird with it! Try stuff that nobody else is doing, and put your heart into your work. You'll attract the people who get you and repel the ones who don't.
