Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Hill, Founder, and CEO of Guard My Practice, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Guard My Practice, a video subscription product for doctors, where I create 15-minute videos on how doctors on the business side of medicine.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a health lawyer and run a successful law firm. I represent mostly doctors. But after doing this for over 20 years, I found myself not just answering the same questions over and over but seeing that the healers of our country were growing burned out and overwhelmed. I'm also a very creative person, always thinking about novel and unique ways of doing things. Whether it's flower arranging or cooking, or setting the table, I want to do it to the best of my ability. I thought - why not use the expertise in law and make it more creative, thus helping doctors in the process? I found that the more I talked to doctors and demystified hard things, they breathed easier and were so grateful. From that, Guard My Practice was born. When I hear from doctors that I helped them and sometimes almost saved their life, which is an odd turn of events, it makes it all worthwhile.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I started my law firm, I had zero clients. I had left my job as in-house counsel, made a spreadsheet of doctors I wanted to work with, and started making lunch dates. From that, I've grown my practice to over 400 clients, and I feel I make a difference in the lives of doctors, which is really what motivates me and what I'm proudest of.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Sales! A service-based business is easier, but when you invest money upfront in a product, then you have to sell it to the world. And it's a crowded marketplace out there.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be prepared for risk.
  2. Take things one day at a time.
  3. Celebrate the victories, and don't let the setbacks stop you.
