Safe & Empathetic Place To Heal Within- Grushon Naturopathic
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in healthcare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Jennifer Grushon, Founder & Naturopathic Doctor of Grushon Naturopathic, located in Monroe, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Naturopathic Physician and have a virtual practice. I offer individualized healthcare services to those struggling with Lyme & Co-infections, Mold Illness, Parasitic infections, MCAS, and other tricky-to-treat diagnoses. My patients are those that have not had success through conventional and more standard naturopathic or functional medicine approaches. I tend to work with those that have a complex medical history and a huge list of mystery symptoms. Many of my patients are bedridden at the time they start working with me or significantly restricted in their activities.
Tell us about yourself
In the past, I worked for established clinics. The time came when I felt strongly about working for myself, and so I did. It was the best thing I had done career-wise, and I never looked back. I specialize in Lyme & Co-infections and CIRS/mold illness, as I have been through a battle with my health with these, plus more I am a warrior, and I get how difficult it is. I have deep empathy for those that struggle with these debilitating illnesses.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been managing to keep things as simple & streamlined as possible. Even though my overhead has increased with adding more supporting staff to enable smooth operation, it has allowed me to be able to dedicate myself to what I do best - being a doctor and delivering excellent care to my patients.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is accepting all the responsibility to make sure the business is being run to standards. I struggled with letting go of many of the tasks for the first year, then started to delegate and outsource tasks. This has been so freeing. It has allowed me to not "be business" all the time and be able to turn off the hypervigilance of trying to stay on top of everything.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Think about hiring/outsourcing this way: Would my time be better spent a different way? Could I bring in more money if I pay someone to do this task? Do I like doing this task? Is this task causing a lot of stress? I weigh these questions in on whether I hire or I continue to do it.
- Don't hesitate to get a team of support on board as soon as possible. I would invest in bookkeeping and accounting, payroll services, and admin support. I also suggest seeking the help of attorneys when setting up your business to make sure it is set up correctly and to help create necessary forms/contracts.
- Lastly, if you have tons of compassion for what you do and let your light shine bright, your business can grow through the best marketing out there - word of mouth.
