Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anya Painter-Chapman, Owner of Growth Spurt Pediatric Therapy, Inc., located in Sebastopol, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is in-home pediatric occupational therapy and feeding therapy. A lot of our clients are referred by our local regional center but we take any pediatric client! We're based out of the Santa Rosa, CA, area, but we see clients via teletherapy anywhere in California.
Tell us about yourself
In 2017 I went to a conference and had this crazy idea that one day I could be a business owner. I wasn't too far out of school and wanted to gain some more experience. What finally got me to pull the trigger was there was a huge need in our community for a program like mine, and I knew I had to bring it to life. What motivates me each day is helping the families that I serve.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was making it happen. I originally wanted to hire people to help me build my business but soon realized I knew more about all the pieces at play just from my own research. Now that I know what it takes to start an in-home pediatric occupational therapy and feeding therapy business, I want to help other occupational therapists do the same with what I've learned. There aren't many comprehensive resources out there to help get us going!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things is learning as you go. There is so much at first, and you really don't know what you're doing! Once you get some experience with putting together pieces of the business, the new pieces fall into play much more easily.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- There aren't many templates out there for how to start a business. You kind of have to learn as you go. Hopefully, this will change in the future! If anyone is out there trying to start an occupational therapy business, I have a comprehensive template for you.
- Running a business can be all-consuming. The best weeks I've had are when at the start of the week, I look at where I'm at and what I want to take on and not take on that week. Then when something comes up, I can say yes or no based on whether or not it's in alignment with my vision for the week.
- Growing a business takes connections. Foster these connections with people you know in your community.
