Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tamara Larson, Founder and CEO of Grow Leaders, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Grow Leaders is a management consulting firm that works with community organizations and businesses to create safe spaces, grow leaders, and build strong communities. Education is our most powerful tool for change. Together, we step up and step out to connect, empower and inspire through transformational learning opportunities that create a place of belonging for all: psychological satiety, mental health, empowering women, creating a safe space for difficult conversations, and ensuring EVERY voice is heard, leaving no one behind.

Tell us about yourself

Growing up in a home with a family business and a mother as a teacher, I learned at a young age the value of education. Along the way, I developed a strong entrepreneurial spirit that is reflected in all that I do. Recognizing my position of privilege, and viewing it as an opportunity, each day, I work to create the change I wish to see, remove barriers, and offer a hand up to those who need it most. A world filled with positive peace is one that will ensure that we leave no one behind.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, my biggest accomplishment is working with others and seeing the change unfold around me. I am so inspired by those I work with who are brave enough to embrace change and be willing to look at the world through a different lens, understand that diversity is a strength and work to establish a safe space for everyone to share their opinions, allow their teams to be creative, perhaps even fail and then learn, and open the door to innovation. This creates the foundation for us to grow as leaders and build strong communities where we all live and work.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a business owner comes with great responsibility. We are often CEO and all other duties as required. Finding the time to do all that needs to be done as well as creating balance, is a challenge yet one that I love. I can plan my own schedule, choose my clients, and focus on my family. What a blessing it is to be an entrepreneur!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Follow your heart. You know what is best.
  2. Never stop learning. Leadership requires growth each and every day.
  3. Listen to understand, learn and understand your unconscious bias, embrace what aligns with your core values, and surround yourself with a team that challenges you yet lines up with what matters most.
