Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alex Fray, Co-Founder of Grow Lab Organics, located in Douglas, Isle of Man.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a cannabis company, and our mission is to help people live better by producing the highest quality, consistent, and safe cannabis products, and services.

Our customers are people that benefit from cannabis-based products as a medicine. This covers a huge population of different backgrounds, ages, races, gender, etc. It could be a mother with MS, a young man with PTSD, an older person with Parkinson's, and so many more.

Tell us about yourself

A desire for my outer world to align with my inner world led me to start on this journey. That is to help people by harnessing the power of plants, building a community, and being the best I can be, striving every day to learn and improve in service of our mission. Building a cannabis company is the perfect combination of these drivers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Cannabis in a legal context is relatively new and very complicated. There are no blueprints, and navigating the legislative and regulatory labyrinth is extremely difficult. Doing that successfully so that in 2023 we can start to fulfill our mission is a major accomplishment and, ironically, only the first major milestone. This has taught me that perseverance in the face of adversity leads to self-belief, growth, and strength.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

You are likely to face challenges; many you can overcome easily, but some will be hard and set you back. In these situations, the ability to get up and go again is one of the hardest things, yet this is one of the keys to enabling success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your "Why" - you must truly believe your product or service has value and have a vision for the future. From this, you can derive your mission which guides you.
  2. Focus - startups take a lot of effort, so make sure it is consistent and in the right areas.
  3. Team - you can't do it alone, so find people with good skills and great energy.
