Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bee Nikula, founder of Grounded in Health, located in Salmo, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Grounded in Health is a holistic health and lifestyle coaching practice that helps busy yet curious women tap into their inner intuition and meet their health goals so they can experience a more balanced life and grow into the best version of themselves. My intention is to help my clients (re)connect their mind, body, and soul as one. I want my clients to understand that they are completely capable of taking back their health, which can mean returning to living a life as close to nature as possible. Currently, my offerings include 1:1 coaching containers, group workshops, and a recently 21-day program called, Shift Your Relationship with Sugar. Everything I offer within Grounded in Health is intentional and aligned with a sole purpose to help each of my clients create the commitment, strength, energy, and health for them to live a life full of adventure, connection, and joy.

Tell us about yourself

Like many, I started out in the corporate world, where I worked long hours, a high-stress job for over a decade. I was living completely out of alignment and ignoring all the signs my body was telling me that something had to change. And that's exactly when everything did change; at 30 years old, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. Talk about a wake-up call! My experience with breast cancer led me to where I am today with my business.

When I chose to take a more holistic approach to my cancer journey and succeeded, I knew that I was meant to move through that experience to help educate others about what is possible within themselves and their body. It was then that my purpose became very clear; I was meant to be of service to those who needed support to move through their own experiences with changes in their health. We all have the potential to overcome adversity, and sometimes all we need is a little support to see that we have that very potential within us; that's where I come in!

What motivates me every day is knowing that I am living in my truth, helping others see the healing possibilities within themselves, building a legacy that not only supports others but myself as well, and the best part is, I get to do it by helping people reclaim back their health while growing into the very best version of themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far was leaving my corporate job and gaining the courage to launch my business and go out independently. This had been a deep passion of mine for quite some time, but I was consistently talking myself out of doing it because of the many uncertainties that can come from starting your own business in a new industry outside of your comfort zone. It meant pushing past my need for perfection and trusting my intuition that this was where I needed to be. Launching my business truly opened me up to a world of possibilities, ones I had never even imagined. The continued success of my clients has reassured me that I have landed in the right space for my business to grow and flourish.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Hello imposter syndrome! Even though I am confident in my craft and my services, that feeling of, "Am I really doing this?!" can creep in and try and talk me out of pursuing my passions. It's important for me to stay in check with my emotions to ensure they do not get the best of me. When negative self-talk starts creeping in (which, let's be real, it happens), I try to approach what's coming up from a place of pure curiosity. Asking myself, what can this teach me?

It can be hard not to compare yourself to others in your field and their accomplishments. It's important to remember that we are all unique; we all have our own paths to follow. Why not use others' success as motivation for yourself!

It can feel lonely when you embark on this journey, especially when you doubt yourself. Ensure you have the practices in place or resources to support you when these feelings come up. Don't let it stop you!

I have found that being vulnerable, putting yourself out there, and being part of a like-minded community can truly help you push through any discomfort you may feel as a business owner. Once you find your community, you will find that there is no judgment, endless support, and words of encouragement to keep you going! So let this be your reminder not to give up!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just do it; there will never be a perfect time to start. If you feel called to start your own business, I encourage you to get uncomfortable and go after your dreams. Why wait until it is too late? Believe in yourself and what you are capable of!
  2. Don't be afraid to outsource or ask for help. We tend to wear many hats when starting a business, and you may feel like you need to take on every single task. This can lead to overwhelm or burnout, which we want to avoid. You want to stay in your zone of genius, so find ways you can outsource parts of your business that take you away from that. For example, web design, branding, legal, etc. Don't be afraid to invest in yourself or your business by asking for help.
  3. Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate. There will be times when it is just you, so it can benefit you to get in the habit of being your biggest fan. It is important to acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter the size, and have faith in what you are doing. Each day, find time to pause for a moment of self-reflection, allowing you to celebrate what you have accomplished. Your confidence will only continue to grow as your business does by celebrating yourself.
