Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erin Wellness, Founder of Ground Wellness, located in Oakland, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Prenatal and Postpartum Functional Strength Training. I help women prepare for and recover from labor and delivery in childbirth.
Tell us about yourself
I got started in Sports Medicine, working with collegiate and professional athletes. I would use physical therapy and strength and conditioning principles to prevent and rehabilitate injuries that would take them off the field. I saw a large gap in the prenatal and postpartum space for my skill set. Physiotherapy or Athletic Training is a middle ground between physical therapy and traditional personal training. The transition into motherhood is extremely taxing on the muscles and joints. I've seen that during the postpartum season, one basically needs to re-learn basic functional movements in their "new body." Functional Strength Training accounts for the activities of daily life that motherhood requires and trains the body to support itself and move well enough to transition efficiently into whatever activity that gives the new mother joy, be that running, dancing, kickboxing, hiking, weightlifting, etc. I feel so blessed to be able to give my clients the opportunity to get back to the movement they love without the fear of injury.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Launching the Find Your Ground Program. A cohort-style postpartum training program for new mothers. It has been a great way to create community and collective growth for new moms.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Boundaries, Boundaries, BOUNDARIES! Especially as a service-based business, the hardest thing is to preserve my energy by saying no to being constantly available to clients or partners. This allows me to give my best yes and the best service to all my clients. Also, having boundaries with myself when I need to be consistent with admin tasks and note-taking.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just start: it is not going to be perfect, and you will not know what you can do better without doing it (sometimes poorly) first.
- Outsource: use sites like fiver and Upwork to help you with graphics and video editing. Not only will it save you time, but it will also allow you to focus on expansion and other projects, so you don't have to spend time learning a skill that you don't ultimately want to be a part of your job.
- Give yourself grace: allow yourself to fail and be grateful for those failures; they are lessons to you on how you can improve.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I have seen that the way you carry yourself and your confidence in yourself plays a huge part in the success of your business. When you are willing to bet on yourself, you will continue to try until you get it right. Also, setting achievable goals is a practice for your brain to watch you achieve things; the more you achieve, no matter how big or small, the more you believe you can achieve. Keep a record of what you want to do and watch your confidence in yourself grow. You can do this!
